BARC 

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai

 

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is a premier research and development centre of the Department of Atomic Energy, located at Trombay, Mumbai.  It was set up in the year 1954 as Atomic Energy Establishment Trombay (AEET) with Dr. Homi J. Bhabha as its first Director.  In 1967, it was renamed as Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.

 

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is a multi disciplinary research centre having state-of-art infrastructure for pursuing R & D covering the entire spectrum of Nuclear Science & engineering.

 

R&D activities of the center cover a very wide spectrum of disciplines including physical sciences, chemical sciences, engineering sciences, biological sciences, reactor engineering, health & safety, materials science, nuclear fuels, nuclear recycle and others. The activities also include operating large facilities such as nuclear reprocessing plants, waste management facilities, fuel fabrication facilities, research reactors, isotope production facilities, while scientific and technical support functions such as human resource development, library and information services, intellectual property protection, technology transfer and technical services.

 

The R&D activities in the development of a supercomputer based on parallel processing have been very successful and the parallel computers developed by BARC are working in various units of DAE as well in several institutions outside DAE.
